Let’s Be Blunt

Posted on Posted in Trend Alerts

The 90’s are back for Spring and Summer hairstyles but in the best way possible.  The Blunt Cut makes its’ return ala Natalie Portman in the 1994 film “The Professional”.  Today, stars like actress Lily Collins and models Nova Orchid and Katy Moore have reincarnated this tomboyish yet feminine style.

The look is classic, simple with a clean-line graphic bob shape.  Blunt bangs are cut to span  almost the entire forehead area making a big statement.  The rest of the bob is seemingly one length usually ending at the chin, however, this spring and summer hair lengths can even be worn longer.  Texture is another part of this trend to note.  Most of today’s Blunt Cuts are styled smooth with a single layer look, while others are styled with a smooth bang or fringe area with the rest of the length styled in a natural looking wavy texture.

To get this look, seek a professional haircut consultation with your Skill Certified Philip Pelusi Volumetric® trained stylist.  They will make recommendations on cut, length and styling while taking into account your face shape and natural hair texture.  Also, your Philip Pelusi stylist will make hair product recommendations to help you re-create your salon look at home.

First, use a Philip Pelusi Shampoo and Conditioner duo to control or enhance your texture.  Next, to style your Blunt Cut style smooth use a heat-activated, heat-protecting styling crème.  Try P2 by Philip Pelusi Soft Wax.  One of its’ key ingredients, Hyaluronic Acid, helps trap moisture to help protect hair from heat styling while its’ shampoo soluble Emulsifying Wax USP (symbolizing the finest grade) helps to seal hair smooth.  Hair is left feeling smooth and silky with lots of shine.

Always mix your P2 Soft Wax with one other P2 styling product to help move this ultra-rich product through the hair and support additional texture issues.  Mix P2 Soft Wax with P2 Fixative for fine textures and densities, P2 Potion for medium and P2 Polish for thick, bulky textures.  Mix in the palms of your hands, distribute throughout damp hair and blow-dry as you round brush or paddle brush your hair smooth.

If wearing your Blunt Cut with some loose waves, mix P2 Soft Wax with P2 ReCurl Smart Styling Treatment.  The P2 Soft Wax will help keep the look controlled and closer to the head; the Blunt Cut is not to be worn with voluminous hair.  The P2 ReCurl contains a Philip Pelusi Proprietary Micro-emulsion to help coax natural waves and when combined with some scrunching and a cone-diffuser blow-dryer attachment, it can give any head a textured look.

Last, apply a final groom to separate hair and enhance this sharp-edged cut.  Jump over to the Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi line for some help here.  Tela Encore is a light, demi-gloss styling paste that contains USDA Certified Organic Shea Butter, Olive and Sweet Almond Oil hydrate and help protect.  Finger-style until hair has desired look.

Violet Ice

Posted on Posted in Trend Alerts

The trend for bold hair color continues into Spring and Summer 2017.  Violet Ice is one of the most popular color trends for this season.  This icy lilac look is pretty and feminine while it really stands out in a crowd.  The color is a pastel lavender with silvery, smoky metallic undertones and works best on cooler skin tones with pink undertones. Here are a few examples of the trend from our designers, Melissa at Cranberry and Olivia at Fox Chapel.

The words “do not try this at home” come to mind when trying to create this soft pastel hair color.  Seek out the professional advice of your Philip Pelusi Skill Certified Colorist.  They will analyze your skin tone, eye color and hair’s condition to determine if this look can work for you.  A personalized color formula and technique will create this unique washed-out purple look and Philip’s exclusive Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Color Lock will be blended right into your color formula!  Available exclusively at Philip Pelusi Salons; a take home version can be purchased to help maintain the effects.  This revolutionary product contains specialized big science micro-emulsions that help prevent color fadage up to 80% in between touch ups.  Also, be sure to help preserve your color investment at home with a special prescription of stylist recommended Philip Pelusi products.

The Violet Ice tone is tricky to preserve so we recommend using a super color protecting shampoo and condition containing color sealing Willow Bark and antioxidants Matricaria, Asafetida, Blackberry and Sage that help preserve color.  Try P2 by Philip Pelusi Fade de Phy Shampoo and Fade de Phy Conditioner.  Plus, alternating with a no-suds cleansing conditioner can help keep color from fading.  Try P2 Clenz Crème.  It’s cutting edge formula, containing hydrating Organic Baobab Oil, doesn’t lather, adds color protecting ingredients and helps create a lustrous shine.

Add a fast-acting, in-shower hair strengthener after every shampoo containing natural plant proteins to help lock in the color molecules deep inside the cortex.  Try P2 DailyHaiRx Xtreme Hair Repair.  It’s Gluten Free Corn, Soy and Wheat Proteins help resurface broken keratin sites helping to seal in color molecules within the hair.  Often called by stylists a “3 Minute Miracle”, P2 Xtreme works quickly helping to create glossy shine and stronger hair too.

And to help maintain the Violet Ice hue in between salons visits, use a color conditioner that adds a boost of color plus lots of shine.  Try P2 Color Boost Conditioner in the shade Violet Orchid.  This deposit-only color conditioner stains the hair with liquefied dehydrated violets. To get that lilac pastel effect, mix P2 Violet Orchid in with your choice of any P2 by Philip Pelusi creamy instant or deep conditioner; or better yet have it custom blended by your Philip Pelusi colorist during your salon visit. And apply several times a week after shampooing. Or mix into the aforementioned P2 Clenz Crème and rinse. And depending on the condition of the hair, a drop or two can also be mixed into any P2 by Philip Pelusi styling product and blown dry into the hair for a stronger violet effect.

80’s Ladies

Posted on Posted in Trend Alerts

Another big (literally!) styling trend for Spring 2017, is 80’s Ladies.  Big, tousled, voluminous curly or wavy hair is all the rage!  Signature keys to this trend are glamour, texture, dramatic side part, height on the top and front of the head and volume all over and all topped off with a bright colored lipstick.  This all sounds very reminiscent of the 1980’s but with one twist; the hair is softer with more movement, less stiff nothing rigid.

To get this look, start by using some products that create volume!  First, on the list should be a big, body building shampoo and conditioner.  Try Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Volume Shampoo and Volume Conditioner.  Just as its’ name says, this dynamic duo is designed to give volume and texture to any hair type; specifically finer and less thick heads of hair.  Containing Philip’s proprietary Tela Organic Regenerating Blend with Organic Red Sage, Sprouted Soy and Horsetail help to naturally build gripping texture to the hair.  These products help get any big hairstyle off to the right start.  A too-high softening shampoo or conditioner will make hair difficult to style and won’t last throughout the day.

Next, apply the right styling grooms.  On clean damp hair, give hair a boost with a few mists of Tela Beauty Organics Boost leave-in volume building treatment.  It’s Organic Sea Buckthorn Berry plus other organic strengthening proteins help build texture from inside the hair strand.  Never coating the exterior so hair feels natural yet is full of volume.

Then, make it bigger!  Try Tela Make It Bigger Hair Thickening Serum.  Apply alone or right on top of Tela Boost for extra volume.  It’s Organic Baobab Protein along with Philip’s Tela Organic Regenerating Blend help increase hair’s diameter with texture building organic proteins.  Hair feels thicker and styles last longer throughout the day.  Any texture wanting more body and volume can use Tela Make It Bigger but it is especially sought after by finer, limper heads of hair.  Apply a dime to nickel size amount, concentrating at the roots.  Style hair with a big round brush for smoother looks or a cone-diffuser for natural looking waves or curls.

Last, lock in the style!  For a slightly crisper look, add a pump or two of a non-aerosol mousse.  Try P2 by Philip Pelusi Liquid Mousse.  It’s Silk Protein creates shine and helps build volume and texture and can be applied wet or dry to further scrunch the style into the perfect 80’s Ladies look.  If applying to damp hair, apply at the roots for an extra root booster.  If applying to dry hair, pump into palms and distribute evenly throughout the hair lightly gripping hair scrunching as you go.

If you want to go seriously 80’s a super firm hold, finish the look with P2 Industrial Finishing Spray.  This non-aerosol mist holds hair firmly in place all day then rinses clean away with the next shampoo.  Lightly mist all over, dries quickly without drying out the hair.  Gluten Free Corn, Soy and Wheat Protein helps hold and strengthen hair.

Dressed Up Ponies

Posted on Posted in Trend Alerts

Normally as we move from the holidays into the Spring season, hairstyles become more casual and relaxed.  Ponytails usually do too but not for this Spring.  They’ve gotten all dressed up.  Braided, twisted or adorned with jewels, pins and metallic bands.  There is no specific way to wear the ponytail; meaning hair can be worn half-up and half-down, worn with a high or low ponytail, tight or loosely braided.  The sky’s the limit on creativity.

But the right styling tools make all the difference in creating these ponytail looks.  First get the right amount of texture on the hair.  Prepare late in the day or second day hair with a powder-free dry shampoo.  Try Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Dri Shampoo.  This spray-on version contains Organic Lavender Oil freshens hair’s scent and creates shine.  But color protection is also a benefit with this product, with powerful anti-oxidants Organic Reishi Mushroom, Oolong Tea, Chinese Foxglove and White Tea helping to prevent hair color oxidation.  Mist on and brush through the hair till the proper level of texture is achieved.  This step will make hair much easier to work with.

No matter what type of dressed-up ponytail you want to create, products that mold and groom the hair while remaining soft and pliable are absolutely necessary.  If setting the hair first, use the aforementioned Tela Dri Shampoo for a very light hold or switch into a still flexible spray that has a little more hold.  Try P2 by Philip Pelusi Fluid Spray.  Great for any type of setting; curling iron, hot rollers or Velcro.  Mist P2 Fluid Spray on the section first then wrap the hair around, let set a second or two with a curling iron and a couple of minutes for rollers.  Unwrap, let cool and get body with flexible hold.  Organic Baobab Oil helps keep the product soft and moveable while adding shine.

Then for sculpting your dressed-up ponytail, choose a hair molding groom depending on the finish you want to create on the hair.  Try Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Encore with hydrating Organic Shea Butter for a beautiful demi-gloss sheen and lots of control.  For flexible hold, try P2 Honey with actual honey humectants that moisturize while giving a soft, pliable hold.  Once you finish creating your look, add a dash of P2 Fluid Spray to lightly hold the whole look in place.  Last, adorn your dressed-up ponytail with jeweled clips or pins or add a flashy hairband to tie off the look perfect for Spring 2017.

Gent Cropped Cuts

Posted on Posted in Trend Alerts

Men’s haircuts continue to be an important part of the trend landscape for Spring 2017.  And this Spring, the Gent Cropped Cuts trend adds even more texture and messiness to the look.

To get the look, first get a first-rate haircut from your skill certified Philip Pelusi Volumetric® trained stylist.  Philip’s exclusive organic cutting system takes into account hair texture, growth patterns and facial shape to create a custom hair design specific to you.  Gent Cropped Cuts have height on top of the head then are cut short on the sides gradually fading into the much longer top.  Or there is a severe disparity in length, where the sides are shorn super short with no graduation and the top of the hair formed into a longer pompadour shape.  If hair is naturally straight go with that but if hair has any amount of wave or curly texture, exaggerate that with product.  And neatness doesn’t count!  In fact, a disheveled messy texture gets high style marks!

A great style start with healthy hair which means a healthy scalp.  And since this style requires height and fullness, be sure the hair and scalp are free from all dirt, debris and product buildup.  Use a shampoo that removes not only oil and buildup, but also helps create a healthy environment for a man’s scalp.  Try P2 by Philip Pelusi DeTox HaiRx Shampoo Treatment.  It contains a myriad of scalp cleansing and balancing ingredients including a unique DHT Toxin Removing Micro-Emulsion, including Tall Oil (surfactant derived from wood pulp), that helps gently cleanse excess DHT toxin from the scalp surface.  While it helps to naturally PH balance the scalp with herbs Ivy, Rocket, Whortleberry and Watercress.  These also help reduce sebaceous oils and ward off future dirt and oil helping hair and scalp stay cleaner longer while treating hair and scalp with restoring nutrients.

For height, apply a pomade or gel at the root area of wet or damp hair and pull up and away from the scalp while drying the hair.  This helps create the lift needed to achieve the height of the pompadour or longer top length.  Try P2 Fixative.  This flexible hair gel can be applied damp to any texture and either blown-dry or air-dried.  Karaya and Locust Bean help keep the product flexible yet it maintains a soft but long lasting hold.

Once hair is dry apply a finishing groom to sculpt, shape and style the hair.  Gent Cropped Cuts have several signature surface finishes.  Either shiny and reflective, semi-gloss or ultra-matte.  For a shiny surface finish, choose a texture controlling pomade such as Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Hair Gloss.  It contains Organic Acai and Argan Oil for shine and moisture.  Its firmer texture helps hold roots up and away from the scalp.  For a semi-gloss finish, try Tela Beauty Organics Composer.  It contains Honey to keep the hair pliable and dries to a semi-gloss shine.  And finally, for a sophisticated matte finish and control, try Tela Beauty Organics Encore.  It contains Organics Shea Butter which helps to hydrate the hair and scalp.

Add an easy-to-use, in-shower hair strengthener after every shampoo containing natural plant proteins to help lock in the color molecules deep inside the cortex.

Spring Fresh Hair

Posted on Posted in Trend Alerts

The gloominess of the winter months can take a toll on anyone, mentally and physically. Once the sun comes out we are ready for a fresh start, exfoliate our skin and repair any damage to our hair that the dryness may have caused.
The first step to repairing winter hair is to find a good detox shampoo, something that will rinse away product build up that may be left on the scalp without striping color. It is important to detox your scalp every now and then, built up toxins on the surface of the scalp can strangle healthy follicles impeding its growth.
Once you’ve detoxed, your hair will need to hydrate. Just like your skin, hair needs to be hydrated to maintain its soft and healthy shine. A deep hydrating conditioning treatment will restore moisture to parshed hair for scalps for a softer, healthier state that will better hydrate your hair for spring hairstyles. For ultra-restoration use a heat activated leave-in treatment that will act as a strength enhancing repairing groom when activated by heat while blow drying or prior to flat or curling iron work. Adding these three steps into your haircare routine will give your winter hair the reboot it needs for a healthy spring.

Suggested products for a Winter Hair Reboot:
Whisk away product build up and scalp debris that can potentially strangle healthy follicles impeding its growth. We suggest: P2 by Philip Pelusi Detox Shampoo Treatment
Restore parched hair and scalp to a softer, more healthy state. We suggest for medium to thick hair: P2 by Philip Pelusi Deep Hydrating Hair and Scalp Treatment and for finer hair, a hydrating treatment that won’t weigh hair down: P2 by Philip Pelusi Intense Hydrating Treatment
A repairing heat activated leave-in treatment used when styling hair that will strengthen and add shine to any hair texture. We suggest: P2 by Philip Pelusi Smart Styling Treatment RepairHair

Runway Reds 2017

Posted on Posted in Trend Alerts

This Spring wild red hues will take center stage, pushing a traditional color outside of the lines. Making a statement with variations of red color is a bold move to show your fierce side. From warm and cool tones that range from natural to vivid shades there is a shade of red for everyone. Seen on the Gucci runways pairing effortlessly with Alessandro Michele’s unique color palettes, this color is gaining traction for 2017.

When transitioning to a red color keep in mind your skin tone. Warmer and copper tones compliment fairer complexions whereas auburn hues compliment warmer complexions. Consult with your professional colorist before diving into the color. With red being one of the hardest colors to maintain ask your colorist to add in a color locking product that will preserve the color by its ingredients being deposited into the hair strand along with the color molecules.

Once you’ve left the salon you’ll want to find products to use at home that are going to strengthen your hair and seal in color. A protein formulated groom can help to repair damaged hair being applied to wet hair before styling. Combining that with a color enhancing conditioner will give you the protection you need to keep your new red color shiny, healthy and vivid!

Suggested Products: A treatment that contains color preserving ingredients that helps improve color and condition while improving shine and color. We suggest: Tela Beauty Organics Color Lock

A heat activated groom that strengthens hair that can be applied to damp hair prior to blow dry styling or dry hair prior to flat or curling iron work. We suggest: P2 by Philip Pelusi RX RepairHair Smart Styling Treatment

A color enhancing conditioner that that’s available in 8 shades including Mandarin Citrus for warm reds or Cherrymint Bark for cool. We suggest: P2 by Philip Pelusi Color Boost Color Enhancing Conditioner
