The year was 1966 and Philip Pelusi had just begun his career in hair. He was invited to make a formal presentation at NYC Educational for hairdressers, showcasing his cutting-edge fashion haircuts & designs. The vibe was office-chic clothing and coiffures.
Philip cut and styled his model showing the group the latest in hair trends and what was the beginnings of what would eventually be Philip’s trademarked Volumetric Haircutting The Pelusi Method. Here are two incredible shots from the event.

Morpheus, “Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.” Cool quote from one of the most famous movie series of the 1990’s that also helped set this sci fi-esque look and vibe from the era.
And these stunning looks, created by Philip and his Design Team, echo this strong 90’s sensibility but with a feminine intricate updo to juxtapose the stern tough clothing provided by Shadyside’s Max Alto.
Philip shares, “Modern meets medieval was our theme for this shoot we did as part of collection for a European magazine.”

From the creative genius of Philip Pelusi Creative Director Jeffrey Reitz! Presenting the Duck Parade at Philip Pelusi! This cool team building exercise was Jeffrey’s brainchild to boost Designer creativity and just plain have fun, creating these unique looks of duck couture and coiffure. Everything including hair, makeup and clothing, each salon was assigned a duck to create a unique look in homage to many popular superstars of that era.
Creative Director Jeffrey Reitz and Designer Teri H. doing the ducks runway hair backstage at NYS Mercedes Benz Fashion Week
The Philip Pelusi Salon Design Teams created Duckatella Vesace, Vera Wing, Karl Duckerfeld, Christian Duckboutin, Duck Dior, Duck Gaultier, Ducky Cleopatra in honor of Beyoncé’s character as Foxxy Cleopatra in the then popular movie Austin Powers, plus a duck created in Philip’s likeness (2nd duck from the right on the top row). Check out the Philip-esque hair, spectacles, and suit!
And kudos, the images were published in American Salon Magazine and the ducks went on tour to NYC Mercedes Benz Fashion Week presented at the Tela Design Studio! That’s just ducky!
Designer and Talent Development Trainer Regina at The Block was part of salon team participants and still absolutely raves about the event.
Regina shares, “We all had a blast! Ross Park (now The Block) was inspired by Victoria Secret’s fantasyangel wings and diamonds. We were all given just a plain white lawn duck. Each salon had one and I remember meeting up a few times to work on it. It was team building because we all worked together and it got the creative juices flowing. I think there might have been some hair and craft stuff to choose from at The Philip Pelusi Center for Talent Development but I think we went to Michaels and other craft stores to get supplies. We had a lot of fun doing this project and it was hilarious presenting them.”

The clothes and hair expressed a real L.A. vibe but with all the talent of their Pittsburgh trend team.
Philip shares, “These photos are a sample of some of the looks we put together for a hair presentation for The Seattle Pacific Hair event.”

These incredible hair sculptures were created by Philip and his Design Team in 1983. All handcrafted, some were flexible twists created from the model’s own hair while others were created by twisting real or artificial hair around a pieces of wire. Truly works of living art!
Philip shares, “We were invited by Modern Salon Magazine to be featured as part of a continuing series by Philip Pelusi. So we created these sculpted twisted looks for the feature. We used P2 Soft Wax gently heated with a hairdryer to spread through the hair with a touch of P2 Fluid Spray as well, then twisted and placed under a hooded dryer for 15 minutes. Interestingly I shot these photos in black and white with an old Polaroid camera!”

Crimp ironed hair headlined the hottest hair trends back in the 1980’s. Boy George, Madonna and more rocked this totally rad do! LOL Google it! As always ahead of the trend, Philip Pelusi and his trend team circa the 1980’s created this elegant look sporting several crimped textures.
Philip shares, “We created this look and shot the images at an incredible dance and concert venue Metropol in the Strip District in Pittsburgh in 1980s. The design team did the styling for a standing room only audience. We were a hit!”

This stunning model with the most incredible natural texture hair was the subject of a Philip Pelusi photoshoot in the 90’s. Keisha’s beautiful hair was a much-welcomed outlier in that she wore her hair in it’s perfect natural state during a time, the 1990’s, the hair trends definitely leaned mostly towards relaxed and blown out textured hair.
At Philip Pelusi, we love natural texture so there were many photos taken with this full voluminous look and others with this intricate coiled updo created by Sam C, circa somewhere in the 90’s. Sam twisted and coiled her natural hair in and around these Italian hair coils, literally sculpting the updo like a renaissance sculpture. It was a true work of living art!
Philip shares, “I am so honored and proud of the awesome contributions of our creative group. And everything generated around one goal to elevate hair, our creative edge, to elevate the hair designer, and being part to a revolution that put hair dressing on the map! We always thought of hair as a fabric and designed accordingly. I am also so proud or our present Trend Team @ Philip Pelusi and all of our Talent Development Leaders and Designers for continuing to raise the bar of our salon collective.”

Move over Belinda Carlisle (lead singer of The Go’s Go’s), your rad fauxhawk 80’s ‘do’ went upscale in the skilled haircutting hands of Philip Pelusi! Philip, pictured here with his model, plied his mad Volumetric The Pelusi Method Haircutting Techniques to create a graduated laying system to uniquely support this upward direction of the hair.
This allows the Guest easier, faster styling replying more the cut itself instead of solely on products. The hair looks healthy, soft and lux. Philip set this trend early with this look circa 1980’s yet it remained popular for most of that decade…believe me know LOL.
Philip shares, “The Volumetric Haircut Techinique was the VoluRaising Razor Cut which created the great lift to the hair. Such a unique way of supporting the direction and jump to the hair. And the makeup was done by Kathy Cappello who toured with Prince for a seasons doing makeup for him and others in the band. She is also the model in the photo with the longer big hair.”

There are so many beautiful elements to this Philip Pelusi image from the late 1980’s. Soft glowing makeup and lighting, feminine upswept hair, glossy bold lip color, the models elegant pose with seemingly praying hands and angelic expression.
And the most interesting element is the hairstyle, not a long hair updo that one might first surmise from the photo but instead an upswept shape created from a somewhat shorter layered Volumetric The Pelusi Method Haircut.
Philip shares,“I used warm lighting for this to soften and reflect the mood to showcase the model’s inter as well as outer beauty. The Volumetric Haircut layers refers reflect the versatility of the Pelusi Method Layering System on a mid-length bob with a 1 inch undercut to allow the hair to swing and be styled different ways.”
