The creative trio of Philip, Jeffrey and Nikki got together to create this niche photoshoot.  No other models just this one outstanding model perfect for the looks we wanted to create.  Jeffrey even used miscellaneous fabrics to replicate a bridal veil.  Philip used special lighting and gold bounce cards to further create the glow we were going for.

As for the glowing makeup effects, Nikki B. shares… “This was such a fun photoshoot!  We wanted to create a number of makeup and hair looks for bridal season as well as some mod looks as well.  We wanted to make the most of the model’s sun-kissed look, gorgeous skin and silky shiny hair.  She had such great bone structure, it was fun to enhance her beautiful facial features using bronzer and shimmery highlighters.  And Jeffrey had a blast with his masterful hair creativity.”

Behind the chair is where Philip created his trademarked Volumetric™ Pelusi Method organic hair cutting system!  Innately, Philip knew how he wanted to shape, sculpt, and transform hair.  But to communicate and teach his natural hair intuition he created Volumetric™ Pelusi Method in 1972.

One of the staple technique in the system is the Radius (a.k.a. Radical) Haircut Technique.  Philip created this technique specifically to create movement and bounce in wavy and curly hair, giving the hair a sweeping energy.

Philip shares… “I didn’t invent the haircut, I just made it better.  I created this organic cutting system to take into consideration texture, density, growth patterns, fall lines, and the shape of the head.  Through this cutting system, we create a custom cut for every client.”

Philip has taught his system around the globe and most importantly here within his Philip Pelusi salons.

This cool geometric cut and color design was created by Philip around 1969!  He was commissioned to create something spectacular for the cover of a German avant-garde magazine.  And no doubt he achieved it, starting the beginning of our reputation as a high fashion salon group all over the globe.

What was the inspiration for this edgy design?  Philip had a client that had moved to the USA from Germany with her family when she was around 7 years old.  All grown up in this photo as you can see, she wears Philip’s design well.  He was so inspired by her that he created this architectural Volumetric Haircut, Hair Color and Design specially for her.  His name for the design is very fitting, Neo Geo.

Some styles are simply timeless and it seems the mustache is one of them!  Today you will see mustaches popping up on sports stars to Hollywood stars like Zac Efron, Joe Jonas, and our very own Pittsburgh Pirate Pitcher Paul Skenes.

Then there are the iconic mustache wearers such as actors Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot, and this timeless look worn by Mark Mallone, the Steelers Quarterback from 1980-1987.  His stylist?  None other than Philip Pelusi!  And the stache is perfect fit!

Philip Pelusi shares… “Loved this cut on this model, the strong asymmetrical shape and angles surrounding her delicate facial features.  And a great haircut for fine, thinner hair types, making the hair look thicker, with movement.  And the layers are so versatile so depending on the styling product applied and how the angles are shifted or pieced out really changes the look and feel of the cut.  It’s timeless really, a perfect look today, low maintenance too.  Today, I’m imaging it with creative colors like our Trend Team have shown recently.  I’m really looking forward to the Trend Team presenting the Gothic Nuvo Collection.  We are a Playground for Hair!”

Hard to believe it’s been almost 60 years since Philip started his 1st hairstyling job right out of beauty school.  And no less his first job was at the prestigious Saks Fifth Avenue Hair Salon in downtown Pittsburgh.  His story is pretty cool and so are these rare photos…

Philip shares, “I dropped out of high school to work as sheet metal worker and I was a proud member of Sheet Metal Local #12.  I respected the value of a hard day’s work and earning a paycheck.  I also knew I wanted to do something creative, perhaps in fashion I thought.  Then started attending Pittsburgh Beauty Academy and on my first week I knew I found my calling.  I sold my car to pay for beauty school and started on this exciting journey.  I opened my first salon at the tender age of 20 and still love every minute.  I still have something to say, create and be, so our journey continues!”

It was arguably known as one of the coolest spaces in Pittsburgh in the 70’s and 80’s, The Philip Pelusi Bank Center location opened in 1977 in downtown Pittsburgh.  Along with the totally unique space, was a team of superstar talents, Philip’s Designer staff circa 1979.  The Designers in this photo were the winners of a Philip Pelusi Volumetric Haircutting and Design Contest!

Mega talents from back in the day like Toni (far right batwing sleeve dress) and legendary mega talent Jeffrey can be spotted in photo too (in motion at the top right of group).  Jeffrey joined Philip’s talent team in 1979, eventually becoming the 1^st Philip Pelusi Creative Director and then eventually the 1^st Philip Pelusi International Creative Director.  And today the Philip Pelusi legacy of talent continues now and into the future!

Recognize any familiar faces?  Here’s the team at the Philip Pelusi Squirrel Hill location back in 1972.  Like all Designers at Philip Pelusi everyone started somewhere, sometime, and grew into powerhouse bookers and reaching the tops in hair artistry talent.  And today this legacy of achievement continues now and into the future!
